Gilching sits on the gravel plain west of Munich in the district of Starnberg, and from above it looks like several villages that have grown into one another. Residential streets spread in loose, looping patterns, broken by open fields and patches of woodland. The S-Bahn line to Munich runs through the town, and the A96 motorway passes along its northern side.
The area has been settled for a very long time; a Roman road once crossed this plain, and finds from that period have been made locally. Today the town is better known for its proximity to the Oberpfaffenhofen airfield and aerospace research site on its southern edge, whose long runway is one of the most distinctive straight lines on the local map.
