Gilly lies on the north-eastern side of Charleroi, part of the city since the Belgian municipal mergers of the 1970s. From above it reads as a dense working-class district. Rows of terraced houses follow long streets that run out from the centre, broken up by rail corridors, industrial plots and the green patches that mark former colliery ground.
Like much of the Pays Noir, Gilly grew on coal. The mines have closed, but their traces remain in the land. Spoil heaps, now overgrown, rise as rounded forms at the edges of the street grid, and old industrial routes still set the direction of many roads. On a map the district looks layered, as if several eras of work had been drawn on top of each other.
