Gilroy occupies the southern end of the Santa Clara Valley, where the flat valley floor narrows between the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west and the Diablo Range to the east. From above, the city spreads across level ground, with US 101 running north to south along its eastern side and the older town gathered around Monterey Road.
The town is widely known as the Garlic Capital of the World, a title tied to the surrounding farmland and to the long-running Gilroy Garlic Festival. Its historic downtown keeps an orderly street grid, while newer neighbourhoods to the west follow looser curving layouts that climb gently toward the foothills.
