Glencoe sits in the highveld grasslands of northern KwaZulu-Natal, a short distance from Dundee. From above, the town has a straightforward, planned layout. Streets are arranged in a loose grid, the railway runs through, and the open veld stretches in every direction. The township areas nearby add their own denser street patterns to the wider map.
Glencoe grew as a railway junction and a service town for the surrounding coal mines. Coal mining shaped this part of the province from the late nineteenth century onwards. The region also saw fighting during the South African War of 1899–1902, and the battlefields around Dundee are still visited today.
