Gomīshān lies in the far north of Golestan province, on the coastal plain near the southeastern corner of the Caspian Sea. The land here is almost perfectly flat, and the town's streets spread across it in a fairly regular pattern. Main roads cut straight through, residential blocks line both sides, and beyond the edges the map opens into farmland and marsh.
Between the town and the sea lies the Gomishan wetland, a shallow lagoon and marsh system listed as a wetland of international importance. It is a stopping point for migratory birds. On a map it adds soft, irregular water shapes on the western side of the town, in contrast with the ruled lines of fields and roads.
The town belongs to the Turkmen Sahra, the plain of northeastern Iran where much of the country's Turkmen population lives, and it is not far from the border with Turkmenistan.
