Gotan is in Nagaur district in central Rajasthan, in the semi-arid country between Jodhpur and Ajmer. From above, it is a compact town. A tight cluster of streets surrounds the old market area, newer houses spread along the main roads, and all around lies the wide, pale plain that marks this part of the state.
The town is known for its limestone. Quarrying and the lime and cement industries built on it have shaped both the local economy and the land.
