Grafton lies just southeast of Worcester, in the rolling country of central Massachusetts. Like many New England towns, it is not a single dense centre but a set of villages spread across a wide area. The historic town common sits on higher ground, with churches and older houses around it, while other villages grew along the Blackstone and Quinsigamond rivers below.
Mills once operated in several of these river villages, powered by the water that runs through the valley. Today the town mixes quiet residential streets, farmland and woodland. North Grafton is home to the veterinary school of Tufts University, whose campus occupies a large tract of open land on the north side of town.
