Great Falls is a community in northern Fairfax County, set along the Virginia bank of the Potomac River upstream from Washington. It has no grid and very little dense centre. Instead, roads curve through woodland and follow the lie of the land, and houses sit on large lots, so the map is made of long, looping lines with generous spaces between them.
The river forms the northern edge, and at Great Falls Park it drops over jagged rocks into the narrow Mather Gorge. The same park preserves remains of the Patowmack Canal, an early navigation project backed by George Washington to carry boats around the falls. On a map the gorge and the canal traces add sharp detail to the riverbank.
Georgetown Pike, a historic route, runs through the area and ties its winding roads together near a small village centre.
