Greater Sudbury covers an unusually large area, and its map is dominated by water. More than three hundred lakes lie within city limits, with Ramsey Lake right beside downtown. Neighbourhoods and former towns merged in 2001 form scattered clusters of streets separated by lakes, rock and forest, linked by highways crossing the Canadian Shield.
The region sits in the Sudbury Basin, a structure formed by a meteorite impact nearly two billion years ago, and the impact left rich nickel and copper deposits. Mining shaped the city, as the Big Nickel monument and the tall Superstack at Copper Cliff show. Laurentian University and the Science North centre both sit near Ramsey Lake.
