Greenwich Village is one of the few parts of Manhattan where the grid gives way. Its streets predate the Commissioners' Plan of 1811 and follow old property lines and paths, so they run at angles, bend and meet unexpectedly. The best-known result is the intersection of West 4th Street and West 10th Street, two streets that would never cross in the regular grid.
Washington Square Park, with its marble arch at the foot of Fifth Avenue, anchors the district, and New York University's buildings surround much of it. To the west, Christopher Street and the Stonewall Inn, a site central to the history of the LGBTQ rights movement, lie among small triangular blocks and quiet residential streets.
