From above, Grimbergen looks less like one town than a group of settlements. The historic centre gathers around its abbey, and the surrounding villages each keep their own small knot of streets. Between them are patches of field and woodland, a reminder that open country still starts just beyond the northern edge of Brussels.
The Norbertine abbey was founded in the twelfth century and gives the town most of its reputation. Its name reached a far wider audience through the abbey beer that carries the Grimbergen name and a phoenix emblem. On the map the abbey precinct appears as a dense block of buildings and gardens, with the market streets and residential lanes spreading out from it.
A Grimbergen map poster also shows the long, straight line of the canal on the eastern side, with its roads and industrial plots running alongside. The contrast between that engineered line and the irregular village roads gives the drawing its character: a place where old parish geography and twentieth-century infrastructure sit side by side on a single sheet.
