Groß-Gerau is the seat of the district of the same name in southern Hesse. It lies in the Hessian Ried, the low plain east of the Rhine. The surrounding land is so flat that roads, rail lines and ditches run in long straight lines with little to interrupt them. Frankfurt, Mainz and Darmstadt are all within easy reach, and the region's transport routes pass close to the town.
The centre is a small historic core with a compact street pattern. Newer residential areas spread outward in regular blocks, and the rail line and main roads cut across the plain. Beyond the houses the land is almost entirely agricultural, divided into narrow strips. Small watercourses drain the Ried toward the Rhine to the west.
