Gujō lies in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, in central Japan. Its historic heart, Gujō Hachiman, sits where the Yoshida River flows into the Nagara, with steep forested slopes rising on both sides. From above, the old town is a narrow band of streets following the rivers, with a reconstructed castle keep on the hill above.
The town is known for its water. Small canals and channels run beside many streets, and springs feed public washing places still used by residents. On the map, the rivers and bridges give the town a clear structure, while the surrounding mountains leave only a thin strip of land for building.
