Gwanda is the capital of Matabeleland South Province in southern Zimbabwe, on the main road between Bulawayo and the Beitbridge border crossing with South Africa. The town serves a wide surrounding district. On a map it appears as an ordered cluster of streets in dry, open country with low hills and scrub.
The layout reflects its origins as a colonial-era administrative and mining centre. A grid of streets fills the centre, government and commercial buildings line the main roads, and residential suburbs spread outward in more curving patterns.
