Haifa is built on the northern end of Mount Carmel, where the ridge drops steeply to the Mediterranean and the broad Bay of Haifa curves away to the north. The topography shapes everything on the map. Streets switch back up the slopes in tight zigzags, neighbourhoods sit on separate spurs divided by wooded ravines, and the lower city runs flat along the waterfront.
The best-known feature is the Bahá'í Gardens, a line of terraces descending the mountainside around the golden-domed Shrine of the Báb. Below them, Ben Gurion Boulevard runs straight through the German Colony toward the port, so gardens and street form a single axis. The gardens are part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most photographed views in Israel.

Carmel switchbacks
Roads zigzag up the mountain in hairpin bends. The ravines between the ridges stay green, giving the upper city its layered, fingered pattern.
Port and bay
Along the lower city, the straight quays and breakwaters of the port meet the smooth arc of the Bay of Haifa, which sweeps north toward Acre.
