Haldensleben lies in Saxony-Anhalt, north-west of Magdeburg, on the small Ohre river. From above, the town has a clear historic core, an oval old town once ringed by walls, surrounded by later residential districts and parkland. To the south, the Mittellandkanal, one of Germany's major inland waterways, crosses the landscape in a long, straight line.
