Hamadān lies in western Iran at around 1,800 metres above sea level, on a plain at the northern foot of Mount Alvand. It is the successor to Ecbatana, capital of the Medes, and is often counted among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The mountain rises to the south-west, and the urban area spreads across the gently sloping ground below it.
The map's most striking feature is its central plan. Six broad avenues radiate from a round central square, Imam Khomeini Square, cutting straight across the older street pattern and giving the city a star-like shape. A ring road and newer districts extend beyond, while the hill of Hegmataneh, the site of ancient Ecbatana, remains a large open area within the city.
Hamadān is also home to the mausoleum of Avicenna, the eleventh-century physician and philosopher, and to the tomb traditionally attributed to Esther and Mordecai. Near the city, the Ganjnameh inscriptions of Darius and Xerxes are carved into rock on the slopes of Alvand.
