Hastings lies on the East Sussex coast, facing the English Channel. From above, the most distinctive feature is the Old Town, a narrow wedge of streets packed into the valley between West Hill and East Hill. To the west, the Victorian seafront runs in a long straight line toward St Leonards-on-Sea, while the newer town spreads inland over the hills.
The town's name is known worldwide from the Battle of Hastings in 1066, although the battle itself was fought a few miles inland, where the town of Battle now stands. Hastings still has one of the largest beach-launched fishing fleets in Europe, and the tall black net huts on the Stade are among its best-known sights. Two cliff railways climb the hills above the Old Town.

East Hill
Open grassland and cliffs rise east of the Old Town. On the map it appears as a wide empty space, framing the town from that side.
