Hastings sits on the Mississippi River in Dakota County, Minnesota, southeast of the Twin Cities, near where the Vermillion River and, a little downstream, the St. Croix join the main channel. From above, the river dominates, a broad band with islands, channels and wetlands. The town's original grid rises from the south bank, and newer neighbourhoods spread out onto the higher ground beyond.
Hastings is the Dakota County seat and one of the older towns in the state, with a historic downtown of nineteenth-century brick buildings along the riverfront. The river crossing has long defined the town. The original spiral bridge was replaced in the 1950s, and a new tied-arch bridge opened in 2013. Lock and Dam No. 2 lies just upstream of downtown.
