Heiloo lies just south of Alkmaar in North Holland, on one of the old sandy beach ridges that run parallel to the coast behind the dunes. The higher, drier ground allowed early settlement, and the map still shows it. The town stretches north to south along the ridge, the railway and main roads follow the same line, and lower polder land opens up to the east.
Heiloo is known for the pilgrimage site of Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Nood and the Runxputte, a well associated with Saint Willibrord, the missionary to the Frisians. The town has grown mainly as a residential place, with many inhabitants working in Alkmaar or commuting to Amsterdam, and it has kept a green character of gardens, woods and estates.

The shrine of Onze Lieve Vrouw ter Nood and the Runxputte well lie within the town. On the map they form a small green enclave among residential streets.
Polder to the east
East of the railway, the land drops into polder crossed by straight ditches and roads. These contrast with the curving streets of the residential districts.
