Hennenman lies in the Free State goldfields area, a short distance from Welkom and Virginia, on the level grasslands and maize country of the Highveld. Seen from above, the town is a clear, orderly arrangement of rectangular blocks, laid out in the straightforward manner of many South African country towns that grew around a railway.
The railway is still one of the strongest lines on the map, running past the town and shaping the way its streets are oriented. Around the built-up area, the land is almost entirely flat, so field boundaries and farm roads form long straight lines that stretch to the edges of the frame, with residential areas set a little apart from the older centre.
