Herentals is one of the historic towns of the Kempen, the sandy, wooded landscape of northern Belgium. Its medieval core is still clearly drawn on the map. A ring of boulevards follows the line of the old ramparts and encloses an oval of older streets. These meet at the market square and its belfry-topped town hall, the former cloth hall.
Two of the old town gates survive, the Zandpoort and the Bovenpoort, marking where roads once entered the walled town. The Kleine Nete river passes close by. Just north of the centre, the broad, straight Albert Canal cuts across the landscape and is joined here by the canal from Bocholt. Together, the water and the ring road frame the town very clearly.
Beyond the ring, the town opens into residential streets, industry along the canal, and the woods and heaths typical of the Kempen. The town hall belfry belongs to the UNESCO-listed group of belfries in Belgium and France.
