Higashi-Matsuyama lies in central Saitama, about an hour northwest of Tokyo, where the flat Kantō plain begins to meet low wooded hills. On the map, the town is centred on the station of the Tōbu Tōjō Line, with dense streets around it, while residential areas, farmland and patches of woodland spread out into the surrounding countryside.
The name means East Matsuyama, and the prefix was added to distinguish it from the better-known Matsuyama in Ehime. The town is known in Japan for its local style of yakitori, made with pork and served with a spicy miso sauce, and it hosts the Japan Three-Day March, one of the largest walking events in the world.
