Hitachi runs along the northern coast of Ibaraki Prefecture as a slim ribbon of city. On one side is the Pacific shoreline, on the other the forested Abukuma highlands, and the space between them is barely a few kilometres wide in places. Roads, the Joban railway line and housing all run parallel to the coast, giving the map a strong north-south grain.
The city gave its name to one of Japan's best-known companies. Hitachi began in the early twentieth century as a repair workshop at a local copper mine, and its factories still shape the town's layout, with large industrial sites visible along the flat land near the sea.
