H̱olon sits on the coastal plain just south of Tel Aviv, and on a map it is hard to say where one city ends and the next begins. Its streets merge with Bat Yam to the west and Tel Aviv to the north, so the city reads as a tight patch of the larger metropolitan fabric rather than a separate island. The sea lies close by, but Bat Yam stands between H̱olon and the shore.
The city was founded on sand dunes in the 1930s and grew quickly, which shows in its regular residential blocks, broad boulevards and neighbourhood parks set between apartment buildings. An industrial zone occupies one side of the city, drawn as larger, emptier blocks.
