Horsham is the main regional centre of the Wimmera in western Victoria, a wide, flat farming country of wheat and other broadacre crops. On a map the town is a clear grid of broad streets. The Wimmera River crosses it in a slow, winding course, and its banks are kept as parkland and green space instead of being built up.
The town is a base for exploring the region. The Grampians, known as Gariwerd, rise to the south, and to the west stands Mount Arapiles, one of Australia's best-known rock-climbing areas.
