Howick lies in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, north-west of Pietermaritzburg. The Umgeni River runs through the town and drops over Howick Falls, a waterfall of about 95 metres, right on the edge of the town centre. On a map, the river and its gorge are the most dramatic feature, a clear break in the street pattern.
Upstream to the west is Midmar Dam, a large reservoir surrounded by a nature reserve. It is known in South Africa as the venue of the Midmar Mile, one of the world's largest open-water swimming events. The dam's broad, irregular shoreline adds a large, organic shape to the map, contrasting with the town's more regular streets.
Just outside town on the R103 is the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, where he was arrested in 1962 and which is now marked by a striking sculpture.
