Ibirité lies south-west of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais, part of the continuous urban area around the state capital. On a map it is a dense patchwork of neighbourhoods laid across hilly ground. Streets bend around slopes and valleys and change direction from one district to the next.
To the south, the land rises into the Serra do Rola-Moça, a mountain ridge protected as a state park, whose green mass forms a clear edge to the city. Streams run down from the hills through the urban area, and a reservoir near the city adds a broad shape of water to the map.
