Ibusuki sits at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture, where the peninsula meets the mouth of Kagoshima Bay. Its map is framed by water on the east, where the town follows the curve of the bay shore in a long ribbon of streets.
Inland the landscape is volcanic. Lake Ikeda, a large, nearly circular caldera lake, lies to the west, and beyond it rises the symmetrical cone of Mount Kaimon, often called Satsuma Fuji. Together they give the wider map strong, simple shapes that stand out against the surrounding farmland.
