Igurusi lies in the Mbeya region of southern Tanzania, on the Usangu plains below the southern highlands. The plains are one of the country's important farming areas, especially for irrigated rice. The town grew along the main highway that runs east from Mbeya toward central Tanzania.
On a map the highway is the town's backbone. Shops and houses cluster along it, and residential lanes branch off on either side. Past the edges of town the land flattens into fields and irrigation plots. The highlands rise far enough away that the immediate map stays open and level.
