Ikeda sits where the Osaka plain meets the hills of the north. On a map the older town gathers around Ikeda Station on the Hankyu line. The Ina River forms the western boundary with Hyogo prefecture. North of the centre the streets start to climb, and the wooded slopes of Satsukiyama rise directly behind the town.
The city is best known as the place where Momofuku Ando developed instant ramen in 1958. The Cupnoodles Museum here marks that history. Ikeda was also an old castle town and market centre, and its layout still shows a compact core of narrow streets. South of the centre, the long runways of Osaka International Airport stretch across the city boundary.
