Inuyama lies at the northern edge of Aichi Prefecture, on the south bank of the Kiso River where it leaves the hills and enters the Nōbi Plain. From above, the river curves broadly past the town, and the castle hill stands at its edge, with the old town laid out just to the south.
The historic district keeps the narrow, regular streets of a castle town, lined with low wooden buildings. An Inuyama map poster shows that intimate grain beside the wide river, with newer districts and rail lines spreading across the flatter land to the south and east.
Inuyama Castle is one of the few surviving original castle keeps in Japan and is designated a National Treasure. On summer evenings, traditional cormorant fishing takes place on the Kiso River below it, and the open-air Meiji Mura museum lies in the hills nearby.
