Ipiales lies in the far south of Colombia, close to the border with Ecuador, at nearly three thousand metres above sea level. On the map the town is a dense, compact grid of blocks on an open highland plateau. The surrounding fields are divided into small irregular plots, and rural roads lead out of the town in several directions.
The Pan-American Highway runs through the area toward the Rumichaca crossing, where a bridge carries traffic into Ecuador. That route gives the map a clear diagonal. East of town, the Guáitara River has cut a deep canyon into the plateau. On paper it shows up as a tight, winding line very unlike the orderly streets of the centre.
The best-known site nearby is the Sanctuary of Las Lajas, a neo-Gothic church built on a bridge across the Guáitara gorge. Many visitors come to the region because of it. The main road south toward the border crossing forms a strong line out of town. It links Ipiales to the bridge into Ecuador.

East of the town the river runs through a deep, narrow canyon. Its sinuous path contrasts sharply with the straight streets of the urban core.
