Itapema lies on the coast of Santa Catarina in southern Brazil, between Porto Belo and Balneário Camboriú. Its shape on the map is simple and striking: a long, gently curving beach, a narrow band of streets parallel to the shore, and forested hills rising steeply behind the town just a few blocks from the sand.
The main beach, Meia Praia, stretches for several kilometres, and the seafront there has seen rapid growth, with tall residential towers rising along the avenue by the water. At one end of the town, the smaller Canto da Praia sits in the shelter of a rocky headland, with a quieter and more irregular street pattern.
