Iturup is the largest of the Kuril Islands, a long, narrow landmass running northeast to southwest between the Sea of Okhotsk and the open Pacific. It is administered by Russia and claimed by Japan, which knows it as Etorofu. On a map its outline is irregular and elongated, pinched in places where bays cut in from both sides.
A chain of volcanoes runs along the island's length, and much of the terrain is mountainous and sparsely settled. Kurilsk, the main town, lies on the western coast facing the Sea of Okhotsk. Roads are few and mostly follow the lower ground, leaving large parts of the island without marked routes.
