Iwakura is a small city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, lying on the flat Nobi Plain just north of Nagoya. It covers a compact area, and its map is correspondingly dense: fine residential streets, railway lines and roads packed into a small footprint. Like much of the plain, it is almost perfectly flat, so the street pattern follows old field divisions and waterways rather than slopes.
The Gojō River runs through the city and is known across the region for the cherry trees lining its banks, which draw large crowds each spring. The Meitetsu Inuyama Line crosses Iwakura, with Iwakura Station close to the centre, linking the city directly to Nagoya. Together, the river and the railway form the two main lines around which the city's streets are arranged.
