Jáltipan de Morelos lies in the southern part of Veracruz, in the warm lowlands leading towards the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the industrial cities near the Coatzacoalcos river. From above the town has an irregular grid centred on its plaza. Streets rise and fall with the uneven ground, and the edges turn into pasture, patches of wetland and scattered settlements.
The town is an old one, with roots before the Spanish arrival. Local tradition holds that it was the birthplace of Malintzin, the interpreter known as La Malinche. Major road and rail routes serve the area, and they cross the map as confident lines against the looser street pattern.
