Jamestown is the capital and only port of Saint Helena, one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. The English East India Company settled the island in 1659, and the town grew where James Valley meets the sea at James Bay, the only practical landing on this stretch of steep volcanic coast. Napoleon was exiled to the island in 1815 and died there in 1821.
The map explains the town at a glance. Walls of rock rise on both sides of a narrow valley, and the settlement follows the valley floor inland in a thin, lengthening line, with Main Street widening into the old town near the seafront. Almost nothing spreads sideways, because the terrain simply does not allow it.
On the western slope, Jacob's Ladder climbs straight up from the town to Ladder Hill, a flight of around 700 steps built on the line of an old inclined plane used for hauling goods.
