Jamjamāl, often written Chamchamal, lies in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It sits on the main road linking Kirkuk to the city of Sulaymaniyah. That road is the backbone of the map: a firm line running through the town, with neighbourhoods branching off it on both sides and fading into open land.
The setting is transitional. To the south-west the land opens toward the plains around Kirkuk, and to the north-east the first long ridges of the Zagros begin to rise. Around the town, seasonal streams and dry valleys leave faint marks between the built-up blocks. Much of the street pattern is fairly recent and was laid out in broad, regular sections.
