Jāmtāra is the headquarters of Jamtara district in eastern Jharkhand, near the border with West Bengal. The town sits on the gently rolling edge of the Chota Nagpur plateau. From above, the railway is the most obvious structure: a long, straight line with the town gathered around the station and roads branching off it.
Away from the tracks, the street pattern is informal. Lanes wind between houses, small ponds and patches of farmland, and the town edges merge into villages and fields. Water tanks and reservoirs are common in this part of the plateau, and they show as solid shapes among the fine lines of the streets.
