Jeju lies off the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, and from above it is an almost perfect oval, stretched from east to west. The shape comes from a single shield volcano, Hallasan, whose summit near the centre is the highest point in South Korea. Contour lines rise gently and evenly from every coast toward the crater, which gives the island an unusually symmetrical form.
Hundreds of small volcanic cones called oreum are scattered across the slopes, and they show up as tight circles on the map. Jeju City spreads along the north coast, with a dense grid around the airport and harbour, while Seogwipo faces south toward waterfalls and cliffs. A ring road follows the shore right around the island, linking fishing villages and beaches.
On the eastern tip, the tuff cone of Seongsan Ilchulbong rises straight out of the sea. In 2007 the island's volcanic landscape and lava tubes were listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. Seongsan Ilchulbong
On the eastern tip, a crater-shaped tuff cone stands almost apart from the island. A narrow strip of land links it to the shore, and its outline is a near-perfect circle in the sea.
The coastal ring
A road runs around the whole shoreline, tying together Jeju City, Seogwipo and a string of smaller villages. It frames the island's oval shape with one continuous line.
