Jekulo is a district in Kudus Regency on the northern side of Central Java, east of Kudus town on the main road toward Pati. On a map that road forms a strong east–west spine, and the settlement grows along it in a dense ribbon of houses, shops and side lanes. Beyond the lanes, the pattern opens quickly into irrigated rice fields and clusters of villages.
To the north the land rises gradually toward the slopes of Mount Muria, and streams from the higher ground run south across the plain. A Jekulo map poster shows how tightly the villages are woven into this farmland, each one a small knot of lanes separated by open fields and irrigation channels.
Kudus Regency is known across Indonesia for its kretek clove-cigarette industry, which is closely tied to the regency's economy and daily rhythms.
