Jieshi lies in the Banan area south of central Chongqing, in the hilly country that surrounds the city. Nothing here is flat for long. From above, the town follows the valleys and ridges, with streets curving around slopes and main roads threading along the lower ground. The built-up area is compact but irregular, shaped more by terrain than by planning.
Chongqing is known as the mountain city, and its outer districts share the same character. Farmland is terraced into the hillsides, villages sit on ledges and in hollows, and newer roads and expressways often cross the landscape on embankments and cuttings. The region is also famous for its spicy hotpot, now served across China.
