Jincheng is the main town of Kinmen, an island group administered by Taiwan that lies just off the mainland coast near Xiamen. Its historic core is a close-knit maze of narrow lanes and small courtyards, with temples and old shophouses along streets too tight for a grid. Toward the west the town opens to the sea, and across the strait the mainland coast is near enough to see.
Kinmen was a front line in the military stand-offs of the 1950s, and the island still bears traces of that era: tunnels, bunkers and tree-lined roads laid out partly for cover. Juguang Tower, a memorial built in the 1950s, is one of Jincheng's best-known landmarks. Nearby Shuitou village is known for its traditional Minnan houses and Western-style mansions built by returning emigrants.
