Júlio de Castilhos lies in the central highlands of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil, on the plateau north of Santa Maria. From above, the town is a regular grid of rectangular blocks, laid out in the planned manner common to towns of the region, with a few main avenues leading out to the highways that cross the surrounding countryside.
The town is named after Júlio de Castilhos, the republican politician who governed Rio Grande do Sul in the 1890s and shaped the state's political life for decades.
