Kabwe lies on the central plateau of Zambia, north of Lusaka, and is one of the country's oldest towns. It grew in the early twentieth century around a lead and zinc mine, and for decades it was known as Broken Hill. The railway from the south arrived early, and the town's layout still follows that line and the main road running beside it.
From above, the older centre shows a colonial-era grid of straight streets near the station, while newer townships spread outward in looser patterns across the flat, open land. The former mine area sits to one side, its pits and workings forming shapes quite unlike the residential blocks. Beyond the edges, farmland and bush fill the plateau.
Kabwe also has a place in the study of human origins: in 1921 miners there uncovered the fossil skull known as the Broken Hill or Kabwe skull. A Kabwe map poster does not show the fossil, of course, but it does show the town that grew around the mine where it was found, shaped by rails, roads and ore.
