Kalsoy is one of the northern islands of the Faroes. It is a narrow strip of land that runs roughly north to south for close to twenty kilometres but is only a few kilometres wide. Its shape has earned it a local nickname, the flute. The name refers to the road tunnels that pierce its mountain spine and link the villages from one end to the other.
On a map the island is a single thin line of mountain. Steep cliffs run along the west side, and the small settlements stand on the gentler eastern coast. One road follows that eastern side, disappearing into tunnels and emerging again at each village. At the northern tip, Kallur lighthouse stands on a grassy headland above the sea, one of the most photographed viewpoints in the islands.
The village of Mikladalur has a bronze statue of Kópakonan, the seal woman of Faroese legend, standing on the rocks by the shore. The northern tip narrows to a headland with a small lighthouse. Here the land ends in cliffs, and the long outline of the island comes to a sharp point.
Western cliffs
The west coast is almost continuous cliff, a clean, unbroken edge. It contrasts with the small bays and landings along the eastern shore.

Kalsoy has become one of the best-known walks in the Faroes. Many visitors remember the ferry from Klaksvík, the tunnels and the path to the lighthouse. The island’s long, narrow form suits a portrait poster, filling the frame from top to bottom.
