Kampala is traditionally described as a city of seven hills, and on a map you can see why. Main roads follow the ridges and valleys, curving around the slopes of Mengo, Kasubi, Namirembe, Rubaga, Kibuli, Nakasero and Old Kampala rather than crossing them. Unlike a grid city, its streets bend and branch, and each hill forms its own small knot of roads.
The central business district sits on and around Nakasero, with broader, straighter streets than the neighbourhoods around it. To the south and east the city runs down toward Lake Victoria and reaches the water at Port Bell and Murchison Bay. Wetlands in the low valleys between the hills show up as open, unbuilt ground running through the urban pattern.
The name is linked to the impala that once grazed these hills. The Kasubi Tombs, burial ground of the kings of Buganda, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the west of the city. The southern edge of the city meets the lake at Murchison Bay and Port Bell. The curving waterline leaves an open space at the base of the composition.
Valley wetlands
