Kampen lies on the western bank of the IJssel, close to where the river flows into the Ketelmeer. From above, the old town is a long, narrow strip running beside the water. Its main streets run parallel to the river, and short lanes cross between them. On the far side of the water, polders and newer districts spread across flat land.
In the Middle Ages, Kampen was a prosperous Hanseatic trading city, and much of that era survives. Several of the old city gates still stand, along with large churches whose towers mark the skyline from the river. The town is often described as one of the best-preserved historic centres in the Netherlands.
