Kanpur lies on the southern bank of the Ganges in Uttar Pradesh. From above, the river forms a long curve along the city's northeastern edge. The urban area spreads away from it to the southwest, with dense older neighbourhoods near the centre and more open, planned areas further out.
The cantonment, laid out in the colonial period, lies along the river with a looser pattern of roads and open ground. Nearby, the older city has tighter lanes and markets. Major roads, including the historic Grand Trunk Road, and railway lines cut through the city, dividing it into distinct sectors.
Kanpur grew as an industrial centre for textiles and leather. It was also the site of fierce fighting during the uprising of 1857.
